HUMANE EDUCATION
Education Curriculum Materials and Presentations
Humane education is more than just educating the public about responsible pet care. Humane education fosters the development of empathy, compassion, and respect for animals, people, and the environment. The Kokomo Humane
Society Education Department has a wide variety of humane education programs, classroom materials, education kits, and other resources available to schools, preschools, and other organizations in the Kokomo and Howard County area. In addition, our Curriculum Library has many books and videos which parents and teachers may check out to use at home and in their classroom.
Each year more and more schools and organizations contact our education department requesting materials, presentations, and shelter tours. We serve as an educational resource for not only teachers, but also scout leaders, churches, youth group
sponsors, student council advisors, home school instructors, and individuals working on class projects and research. We also participate in numerous community events providing education materials, adoption information, and hands-on learning activity booths for children.
Kokomo Humane Society's Education Department continually develops and adds new materials and programs to our resources. If you are within Howard County area and
are interested in requesting materials or would like more information about our programs, please contact our Community Outreach Department at 452-6224 (ext. 3) Monday-Friday. All of our materials and programs are available cost free.

The Humane Education for Youth Mission
Humane education strives to promote and foster the ideals of empathy, respect, and kindness for all living things...human and otherwise.
Although humane education seeks not to impose a standard set of values or beliefs, it does attempt to inform and help people appreciate their role in the web of life.
Teaching young people kindness, compassion, respect, and responsibility is something we consider vitally important. By including humane concepts and programs in the classroom and whenever we interact with children, we
can encourage the development of positive behaviors and attitudes towards animals, people, and the environment.
Working together with teachers, parents, and other compassionate adult role models, we can lay a foundation of humane ethics for future generations.

Why Teach a Child to be Humane?
By teaching a child about caring for a pet, interacting with a pet, and choosing a pet for life....
...We can promote responsibility, kindness, and commitment.
By teaching a child about stray animals, animal laws, respecting your neighbors and community...
...We can promote good citizenship and animal safety.
By teaching a child about wildlife, habitats, and the environment...
...We can promote respect, regard, and appreciation for nature and the inter-relatedness of all things.
By teaching a child about pet overpopulation, animal cruelty, endangered animals, and animal welfare...
...We can provide them with knowledge, awareness, and empowerment.
And finally, when that child begins to consider the lives and feelings of others....
...We have promoted compassion, understanding, and empathy.
