Pictures of our adoptable dogs, cats, and other animals are now listed on PETFINDER, an online database of animals that are in need of homes.  Although we do not list all of the animals we have available, we do provide pictures and information for many.  We invite you to take a look at some of our animals on our Petfinder page and also to please visit the Kokomo Humane Society to see all of the wonderful animals seeking  lifetime, loving homes.

Adopting Pets

Every Nose Needs a Home!

Thanks to a cooperative effort with local veterinarians, the Kokomo Humane Society will be able to guarantee that all adopted animals will be spayed or neutered before they go to their new home. Now, upon approval of the adoption application, the Kokomo Humane Society will make an appointment with the adopter’s chosen veterinarian.  The Humane Society will transport the dog or cat to the vet, where the animal will be altered.  After completion of the surgery, adopters may pick the animal up at the vet’s office.  This will allow the veterinarian to meet and speak with the adopter.

In the past, our adoption fee did not cover all veterinary fees associated with the spay-neuter surgery.  Part of our new agreement with the veterinary community let us pay the cost of the anesthetic and spay or neuter procedure, pre- and post-operative analgesic, and overnight hospitalization.  Your chosen veterinarian will let you know if there will be additional charges for health problems or necessary tests.

Because we will need to pay more for veterinary services, we have posted new adoption fees.  Adoption fees for adult dogs and cats will be $100; and puppies and kittens will be $115.

This new process started May 1.  We look forward to the security of knowing that none of our adopted animals will contribute to the overwhelming pet overpopulation problem in Kokomo and Howard County by producing unwanted litters.  Our thanks to our veterinary partners for their participation in this worthwhile venture.

In addition to the surgery credit, adoption fees include microchipping and registration, 30 days of ShelterCare Pet Health Insurance, a bag of Hill's Science Diet dog food, a leash, a training DVD, and lots and lots of unconditional love and tail wags.

Regular Adoption Fee: $115 for puppies, $100 for adult dogs

ADOPTION INFORMATION

At the Kokomo Humane Society, you can find a wide variety of companion animals, both mixed and purebreds, that are waiting to be adopted by new and caring owners. Generally we will have an average of 65-90 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens that are just waiting for the chance to start over with a new family and a permanent home. In addition, we often have other types of domestic animals - such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets and birds - that are available for adoption as well.

If you visit our shelter and find a pet you are interested in adopting, you will be required to fill out an Adoption Application Form and pay all Adoption Fees that apply.

Once the adoption fees and other requirements have been met you may then take your pet home and begin your new life together.

WAIT!   Make the Right Decision BEFORE You Adopt A New Pet

Deciding to get a pet of any kind should be given careful consideration.  Pet owners are responsible for their pet's health, safety, and well-being for the duration of the animal's life.  Keep in mind that some kinds of pets can live for many years and can be expensive to care for.  Other pets may take a lot of time to groom, train, and exercise.  Additionally, some pets require a lot of space or may need special  equipment. The Kokomo Humane Society encourages anyone who might be considering a new pet to do the proper research before getting one.  That way, you can decide which pet is best suited for your needs and for your particular lifestyle.

REMEMBER...

...A successful pet/owner relationship begins with education and preparation.

...A successful pet/owner relationship is sustained by commitment and responsibility.

...A successful pet/owner relationship ends after a lifetime of companionship, loyalty, AND devotion.

A FEW THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND...

SPAY/NEUTER CONTRACT...The Kokomo Humane Society, like the majority of humane societies and anti-cruelty organizations, must deal first hand with the tragic reality of the pet overpopulation.  Across the United States there are millions of dogs and cats producing millions of puppies and kittens. The majority of these animals will never find homes.  Many either die in the wild struggling to survive or are taken to shelters where most likely end up being euthanized because there are too many and not enough homes available.  These animals, through no fault of their own, are victims of a pet population out of control.  Therefore, the Kokomo Humane Society, like other animal shelters, now requires all animals to be spayed or neutered before they can be taken home. Spayed and neutered pets can not add more pets to the pet overpopulation.  Reducing the pet overpopulation will help reduce the number of pets that have to be euthanized.

NO HOLD POLICY...Animals that are up for adoption will not be placed on "hold" for customers.  We believe that we need to provide the pets with as many opportunities to be adopted as possible. Theoretically, animals on hold would not be available during that "hold" time period.   Should the person change their mind and decide not to adopt it,  then the pet may have missed  out on an adoption opportunity from another person interested in it during that period...an opportunity which might not come along again.

DEPOSIT TO HOLD...The Kokomo Humane Society also will not accept a deposit to hold an animal.  Deposits left to reserve a specific animal is not an assurance that the person will return to adopt that pet and therefore again putting a limit on that animal's adoption opportunities during that time period.

MISCELLANEOUS ADOPTION REQUIREMENTS...There are some additional adoption requirements which must be met before an application is approved.  The shelter staff will be able to discuss these additional requirements at the time of adoption with each new owner.
